Congregation Sha’are Shalom, the Reform synagogue in Waldorf, will hold a special Shabbat service on Friday evening, November 2, at 8 p.m., in solemn commemoration both of the 80th anniversary of Kristallnacht — the terrible “Night of Broken Glass” in which Hitler’s thugs terrorized German synagogues and other Jewish buildings — and of this past weekend’s terrible massacre in Pittsburgh.
We invite both members and nonmembers, Jewish and non-Jewish, to this special service.
Throughout our service, we will intersperse readings of accounts of 1938 with accounts of this past weekend, and we will say the Kaddish prayer in memory of all the victims. We will also sing the beautiful hymn “Etz Chaim” (Tree of Life) in memory of the victims of Tree of Life synagogue.
A member of our congregation, Ellen Cohen, witnessed Kristallnacht as a child in Germany, and will recount those events of November 1938 from her memories.
As usual, we will have an Oneg Shabbat (refreshments) after the service. Please feel free to bring some food to share.
