Dec. 10. A Short History of American Jews: Colonial Period. Rabbi Saltzman presents the history of the Jew-ish Community in the early Americas which served as the subject of a full length opera, Touro, with libretto and music by Arnold Saltzman. Learn about Women in the Colonial Period, Women in History, Jewish Patriots and Loyalists; Slavery and the Abolitionist Movement.
Feb. 11. Denominations: Orthodox, Conservative, Reconstructionist, Reform and Humanistic. A brief background of each denomination; examples of leading rabbinic thinkers; how the movements differ and are similar in interpretation of Jewish Law and Halachah. What is Halachah? Is there a Reform Halachah?
April 14. Salamone Rossi ‘Hebreo.’ Jewish Music of Renaissance Italy by a remarkable composer who stands alone in the history of Jewish music. A brief biography; influences on Rossi; styles of music; rabbinic issues; Rabbinic opinions relating to his music; recorded musi-cal examples; the end of the Venitian Republic.
