The Innocents
by Francesca Segal
Attention Sha’are Shalom book lovers! If you are looking for a good read this fall, you might want to try The Innocents by Francesca Segal. This novel explores the relationships in an insular Jewish community in a suburb of London. The main characters, Rachel and Adam, have been dating since they were sixteen, and now plan to marry. As the wedding plans proceeds to a seemingly predictable conclusion, relationships change, especially with the arrival of the beautiful but tragic cousin of the bride to be.

This novel is a National Jewish Book Awards Winner, and really captures the culture of this Jewish community, complete with trips to resorts in Israel, holidays, and Holocaust survivors. Reviewers note that this novel is a retelling of Edith Wharton’s classic novel, The Age of Innocence, only with blintzes and hamantaschen and a modern day setting. The book may not be an “edge of your seat” page turner, but the wonderful characters will pull you in to their world, the personal and financial scandals will remind you of some real life events, and the descriptions of the food will have your mouth watering for a Mitzvah catering event!

I left this book in the Sha’are Shalom library for Bob to catalogue so feel free to enjoy it as I have.
