An Israel Symphony & A Gala Concert
By Gerald Green

This two-compact disk collection is a recording on February 11, 2002 of a historic performance of two musical works at Washington’s Adas Israel Congregation. Master of Ceremonies for the concert was the famous former CBS newscaster (and Adas Israel congregant), Daniel Schorr.

The concert began with the performance of Hatikvah and The Star-Spangled Banner, sung by two prominent Washington-area hazzans (cantors).

Symphony #1 in B-flat major, “An Israel Symphony,” composed by our rabbi, Rabbi Arnold Saltzman was then performed by the Adas Israel’s Festival Orchestra, under the baton of Joel Lazar.

The concert continued with a number of choral pieces, sung by (1) the Adas Israel Youth Choir, and (2) the Adas Israel Chorale. Mr. Schorr provided commentary between the various musical pieces.

The program concluded with the singing of “America, The Beautiful.”

In attendance at the concert was the then-Israeli ambassador, David Ivry. His full remarks are contained in the program liner of the CD collection.
